Light Emitting Diode (LED)

Light Emitting Diode (LED)

In the quest for radiant and youthful skin, beauty enthusiasts are constantly seeking the latest and most innovative treatments that can provide effective results without the risks associated with invasive procedures. With the fast-paced world we live in, treatments with little to no downtime are hugely popular as they allow us to get back to everyday life quicker and are less obvious to others, allowing us to not give away our skincare secrets. One such revolutionary treatment that has gained momentum is LED light therapy. Often dubbed as the "magic wand" of skincare, LED light therapy has captured the attention of both professionals and consumers alike for its ability to rejuvenate the skin, enhance in-salon treatments, and promote healing. In this post, we delve into the science behind LED light therapy and its role as a cutting-edge beauty treatment.

Understanding LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy stands for Light Emitting Diode and is sometimes simply referred to as ‘LED’. This is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilises different wavelengths of light to stimulate various cellular processes in the skin. Unlike lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) which use heat to target specific skin concerns, LED harnesses the power of light energy to trigger a range of biological responses. Depending on the wavelength used, LED light therapy can address concerns like acne, aging, inflammation, and pigmentation.

The Science Behind the Magic

The effectiveness of LED light therapy lies in its ability to penetrate the skin at varying depths, stimulating cellular activity within. Different wavelengths of light correspond to different colours, each with a unique impact on the skin.

  • Red Light (620-700nm)
this wavelength is known for its anti-aging properties as it promotes collagen production, improves blood circulation, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It's like a natural boost to your skin's resilience and elasticity.
  • Blue Light (405-420nm)
blue light targets the bacteria responsible for acne breakouts. It has antimicrobial properties that help to clear up existing blemishes and prevent new ones from forming, making it a valuable tool for those struggling with persistent acne.
  • Green Light (520-560nm)
green light therapy focuses on reducing hyperpigmentation and targeting uneven skin tone. It inhibits the production of excess melanin, resulting in a more balanced complexion.
  • Yellow Light (570-590nm)
yellow light is often used to soothe and calm the skin. It aids in reducing redness and inflammation, making it an ideal option for those with sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea.
  • Near-Infrared Light (800-880nm)
this wavelength penetrates the deepest into the skin, promoting healing and reducing inflammation. It's often used in combination with other wavelengths to enhance overall results.

The Treatment Experience

LED light therapy

LED light therapy is a gentle and painless procedure that typically requires a series of sessions to achieve optimal results.

This can be performed alongside another skin treatment to maximise results and promote healing, or can be performed as a standalone treatment to boost results of other treatments.

A standalone treatment involves a double cleanse of the skin and a light exfoliation to allow the light to penetrate the skin and not have to fight through layers of dead skin. Goggles will be placed over the eyes and the LED machine will be set up over the treatment area. Your therapist will select the appropriate wavelength for treatment and this will be applied to the area for around 20 minutes. After this, your therapist will tailor a cocktail of finishing products to your needs and apply to the skin – it’s that easy!

At Atone Skin Clinic, we have chosen only the best LED machine for our clients – the HEALITE II. This is an industry-leading device developed by Dr Glen Claderhead and is TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration – Australia’s government authority for regulating medical devices) approved, meaning you can trust that you are receiving a safe and effective treatment every time.

At Home LED Face Masks

L.E.D FACE Mask Non-Invasive Light Therapy BY DERMACEUTICALS

There has been an increase in the market for at-home LED devices due to the convenience of having a treatment from the comfort of your own home. While these are great as a pick-me-up between in-salon treatments, it is important to remember that these certainly don’t replace the industry grade machines used in clinics and not all home devices are built the same. It is important to only purchase devices from reputable brands that have the science and research, and are transparent with it, to back up their machine (remember our discussion on hero products?).

Our hero at-home LED mask is the LED Face Mask by DP Dermaceuticals.

Unlike more invasive treatments, LED therapy typically requires no downtime, allowing clients to resume their normal activities immediately.

  • Gradual Results:
Results become noticeable over time as the skin's cellular processes are stimulated and improved.

  • Consistency is Key:
Regular sessions are essential to maintain and maximise results.

As technology continues to evolve, the world of skincare is witnessing remarkable advancements that offer effective and non-invasive solutions. LED light therapy stands at the forefront of this beauty revolution, harnessing the power of light to unveil the skin's natural radiance.
